A food vending machine costs more than a snack machine of the same size, because it has to keep food safe as well as sell it. At our published starting prices the range is USD 800 to USD 2,100 per unit for standard platforms, with chilled locker cells and heated builds quoted per project. This page shows what each type costs, what the extra money buys, and the running costs that decide whether the machine pays: electricity, card fees, cleaning, permits and the food that expires before anyone buys it.
Quick answer
- Packaged snacks, ambient: compact wall-mount from USD 800 to 1,500; BG10X10 touchscreen from USD 1,200.
- Chilled food: the BG10X10 (from USD 1,200) and KF10X22 (from USD 2,100) in refrigerated versions; the narrow KF6X10 on request.
- Bakery, meal boxes, pre-orders: the K180-6C locker kiosk from USD 1,800; chilled locker cells as a custom build, quoted per project.
- Hot or frozen food: separate designs, quoted per project; no published band.
- Not included: freight, duty, installation, stock, permits and running costs.
Food vending machine price by type
These are the indicative starting prices already published on our site. A food vending machine price is set by its configuration, so treat them as the floor of a quotation, not the total.

Every machine is built to order in our partner factories in China, and we sell direct and, in some regions, through local distributors. The vending machine cost page carries the same bands for every machine type, including industrial and hire lockers.
We don’t quote other manufacturers’ food machine prices here: list prices vary with configuration and are rarely published like for like. Compare quotations line by line using the drivers below.
Why a food machine costs more than a snack machine
A snack machine stores packaged goods at room temperature and drops them into a bin. A food machine adds four things, each with a cost:
- Refrigeration or heating. A compressor, insulation, door seals and a refrigerant chosen for the destination market (R290 or R134a on our refrigerated platforms).
- A control that stops sales. In the US, the FDA Food Code (section 4-204.111) requires a machine selling time/temperature control for safety (TCS) food to stop vending automatically when it can’t hold safe temperatures. Our refrigerated machines have a health-control block that does this; the threshold and how it is cleared are set to your food-safety rules.
- A gentler delivery mechanism. Salads, cakes and yoghurt pots don’t survive a drop from a coil. A lift or a locker door costs more than a coil.
- A screen that informs. US operators of 20 or more machines must show calories before purchase (21 CFR 101.8). A touchscreen can show a nutrition panel per product.
Chilled, frozen, heated or locker: what each adds
| Holding mode / format | Hardware it adds | Cost effect | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambient | None beyond the cabinet | Lowest; the published bands apply directly | Only shelf-stable food |
| Chilled machine | Refrigeration, temperature sensor, lockout | Refrigerated version of a standard platform | Food Code holds TCS food at 5°C (41°F) or below |
| Frozen | Freezer-grade refrigeration, different design from chilled | Not a published configuration; raise it first | Ice cream and frozen meals need their own spec |
| Heated / hot food | Chilled storage plus a heating system, cycle control and logging | Custom, quoted per project | Two temperature zones in one cabinet |
| Locker cells | One door, lock and light per cell; optional chilled cells | From USD 1,800 for six cells; chilled cells quoted per project | Fewer items per square metre than coils |
| Lift delivery | Elevator mechanism and drop sensor | Adds to a coil build | Suits glass, pots and boxes |
Optional extras that move the price on any of these: payment hardware (card terminal, QR, coin and note acceptors), per-cell weight sensing (optional, specified per cell at order, factory-fitted and never retrofitted), branding, a custom enclosure and software integration. Details are on payments.
What moves the price on a food vending machine
- Selections and capacity. More coils, trays or cells mean a bigger cabinet and more mechanisms.
- Holding mode. Ambient, then chilled, then frozen or heated, in rising order of complexity.
- Delivery mechanism. Coil, lift or locker, chosen per product; a mix costs more than one type.
- Payment and identification. A card terminal, QR payment, RFID badge accounts for staff meals, or cash.
- Screen size. A 10-inch sidecar, 21.5-inch kiosk or 22-inch full-size screen are different price points.
- Indoor or outdoor. An outdoor food machine needs overhead protection under the Food Code, and the cabinet needs more protection from weather.
- Quantity. Modified standard models can be ordered singly (4–6 weeks to build); fully custom designs typically start at 10 units (8–12 weeks).
Landed cost: what sits on top of the price
The quotation is not what the machine costs standing on your floor. Add:
- Freight and insurance, depending on the Incoterm (we quote EXW, FOB or CIF).
- Import clearance, duty and taxes, which depend on your country and the tariff classification; a customs broker can estimate them from the HS code and values we provide.
- Delivery to site, unloading and positioning. A crated machine is heavy; plan how it comes off the truck and through the doors.
- Installation, which is optional: done by your own contractor or, in some regions, provided through a local distributor. Where a distributor supplied the machine, it handles warranty and service.
- Spare parts ordered with the machine so they ship together.
The full breakdown is in shipping, Incoterms and landed cost.
Food vending machine running costs
| Cost line | Figure to plan with | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity (refrigerated beverage machine, for scale) | 1,179–1,456 kWh a year; USD 117–144 at USD 0.099/kWh | US DOE Federal Energy Management Program |
| Connectivity | 4G data plan typically USD 5–10 a month per machine | KioskForce |
| Card processing | Typically about 2.6% + USD 0.10 per transaction | Vending Times, January 2026 |
| Cloud dashboard | Included, not a separate subscription tier | KioskForce |
| Permit or registration | Set by your local authority; free registration in England | Local regulator |
| Cleaning, restocking, waste | Your own labour and the food you discard | Your operation |
The DOE figures are for a 30 cubic foot refrigerated beverage machine at the federal-facility electricity price; a food machine with a lift, a heater or many chilled cells will differ. Ask any supplier for a measured daily kWh figure for your configuration, and multiply by your own tariff.
Card fees matter more on food than on drinks because the fixed part bites on every sale. As an illustration at 2.6% + USD 0.10, a USD 6.00 sandwich pays about USD 0.26 (4.3%), and a USD 3.00 snack pays about USD 0.18 (5.9%). Vending Times also cites Cantaloupe’s figure that 71% of vending transactions in 2024 were cashless, so plan on most sales carrying a fee.
Waste is the cost nobody quotes
A snack machine’s stock lasts months. A sandwich lasts days. Under the FDA Food Code, refrigerated, ready-to-eat TCS food prepared on site is date-marked for at most 7 days at 5°C (41°F), counting the day it was made, and food vended from a machine with automatic shutoff must be discarded once it passes that limit. After a temperature lockout, food that sat warm is usually thrown away as well.
So the cheapest machine is the one sized to what actually sells. Two habits help:
- Start with a small chilled range and add lines once item-level sales show what moves. Our dashboard reports which product sold on each card payment, not just the amount.
- Match the delivery mechanism to the product so nothing is damaged in the drop and written off.
The rules behind these numbers are covered in food vending machine regulations.
What to specify if you are buying one
Send these with your enquiry and the quotation will be priced against your food, not a generic cabinet:
- The product list, with the holding mode (ambient, chilled, frozen, hot) and packaging size of each item.
- Expected sales a day, so the capacity and the restock interval fit your shelf lives.
- The delivery mechanism you want, or the products you are worried about dropping.
- Payment: card terminal make and model if you have one, QR, staff badges or cash.
- The site: indoor or outdoor, floor space, power and network.
- The rules you have to meet: your regulator’s temperature limit and lockout rule, and whether you must show calories.
- Quantity, destination country and timeline.
Start from the food vending machines hub, compare the published vending machine cost bands, lay out cells with the locker configurator if a locker fits better, then send your enquiry.
Where a food vending machine is the wrong answer
- Low traffic. If a site sells a handful of items a day, fresh food expires before it sells. Start with shelf-stable snacks and chilled drinks.
- Shoppers want to browse and pick up. An open-door smart fridge or a staffed counter suits browsing better.
- Nobody owns restocking and date control. Waste and lockouts will cost more than the machine.
- You need hot food without the budget for a heated build. Chilled meals plus a microwave beside the machine is the cheaper route, if the site allows it.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a food vending machine cost?
KioskForce publishes indicative starting prices: compact wall-mount units USD 800 to 1,500, the BG10X10 touchscreen machine from USD 1,200, the K180-6C six-cell locker kiosk from USD 1,800 and the full-size KF10X22 from USD 2,100. The BG10X10 and KF10X22 come in ambient or refrigerated versions. Chilled locker cells, heated food builds and other custom food machines are quoted per project. Freight, duty, installation and stock are not included.
Why does a refrigerated food vending machine cost more than a snack machine?
Because it does more. A machine selling perishable food needs a refrigeration system, a temperature sensor and a control that stops sales when the cabinet runs warm, which the FDA Food Code requires for machines selling time/temperature control for safety food. Fragile food often needs a lift rather than a coil so it isn’t dropped, and the screen may need to show calories. Each of those adds hardware and testing to the build.
How much does a hot food vending machine cost?
KioskForce does not publish a price for hot food machines. A heated build combines chilled storage, a heating system, cycle control and logging, so it is quoted per project from the menu, the heating method, the capacity and the site. For orientation, our published starting prices for standard platforms run from about USD 800 to USD 2,100, and a heated machine sits above the standard platforms because it adds a second temperature zone.
What are the running costs of a food vending machine?
Electricity, connectivity, card fees, cleaning, permits and waste. For scale, the US Department of Energy puts a refrigerated beverage machine at about 1,179 to 1,456 kWh a year, or USD 117 to 144 at USD 0.099 per kWh; a food machine’s figure depends on its build. A 4G data plan for a KioskForce machine typically costs USD 5 to 10 a month, and Vending Times reports card processing fees typically around 2.6% plus USD 0.10 per transaction. Food past its date is the cost most often missed.
Can I lease a food vending machine from KioskForce?
Lease-to-own is offered on KioskForce equipment-hire locker systems for sports venues and clubs. Other machines, including food vending machines, are sold outright. Ask about payment terms when you request a quotation. If you want no upfront cost at all, a vending operator that places and stocks its own machines at your site is the alternative, in exchange for a share of sales rather than all of it.
How long does it take to get a food vending machine built?
Modified standard models, such as a BG10X10 or KF10X22 with your branding and payment setup, can be ordered as a single unit and take 4 to 6 weeks to build. Fully custom designs with a new enclosure or custom software typically start at 10 units and take 8 to 12 weeks. Shipping time and import clearance come on top, and so does the time to get any permit or registration the site needs.
Is a food locker cheaper than a food vending machine?
Not per item stored. A locker gives each order or item its own door, so it holds fewer items than a coil machine of the same size, but it handles mixed, fragile and pre-ordered food that a coil would damage. The K180-6C six-cell locker kiosk starts from USD 1,800, and extra locker cabinets and chilled cells are quoted per project. Choose a locker for bakery, meal boxes and click-and-collect, and a vending machine for many units of the same product.
