Car Wash Vending Machine: Towels, Air Fresheners and Detailing Supplies

A car wash vending machine sells the supplies drivers need to finish the job at a self-serve wash: microfibre towels, air fresheners, interior wipes, glass cleaner, tyre shine and small detailing kits. It usually stands by the vacuum stations or between the bays, often in an unstaffed wash that runs around the clock. That position is hard on a machine: overspray from pressure wands, cleaning chemicals, wet ground, sun and, in some climates, freezing nights. So specify the cabinet for the spot (shelter, ingress rating, corrosion-resistant finish, heating or cooling) and keep heat-sensitive stock such as aerosols out of a sun-baked cabinet: US federal labelling tells users not to store pressurised cans above 120 °F. A supplies machine is not a bill changer or token dispenser, which is a separate machine. KioskForce builds supplies vending cabinets to order.

A car wash vending machine sells the things a driver reaches for after the rinse: a towel to dry the paint, an air freshener, wipes for the dash and glass, tyre shine. At a self-serve wash with no shop and often no attendant, it is the simplest way to sell them. The product is simple. The position is not: overspray, chemicals, wet ground, sun and frost. This guide covers what sells, how to specify a cabinet that survives the site, how customers pay and what it costs.

Quick answer

  • What it sells: microfibre towels, air fresheners, interior and glass wipes, tyre shine, protectant and small detailing kits.
  • Where it goes: by the vacuum stations or between the bays, ideally under the canopy and out of wand overspray.
  • What to specify for the site: shelter first, then the ingress rating, a corrosion-resistant finish, heating for freezing climates and cooling or shade for sun.
  • Watch the heat: US labelling on pressurised cans says not to store them above 120 °F (about 49 °C). A sun-baked cabinet can exceed that.
  • It is not a changer. Bill changers and token dispensers are separate machines; a supplies machine sells products.

What a car wash vending machine sells

A self-serve wash gives drivers a bay with a high-pressure wand and foam brush, and many sites add separate vacuum stations (Wikipedia, “Car wash”). The vending machine fills the gap between washing and leaving.

Product Typical packaging Mechanism Watch out for
Microfibre towels Folded, in a bag or flat pack Coil sized to the pack Bulk: towels take a wide pitch
Air fresheners Flat card pack or small boxed can Coil Each scent takes its own selection
Interior and glass wipes Soft pouch or tub Coil, or a cell for tubs Pouches can snag on a coil; test them
Tyre shine and protectant Trigger bottle or aerosol Lift or cell for bottles Aerosols and heat; see below
Small detailing kits Boxed Wide coil or locker cell Higher price; keep them visible
Drinks Bottles and cans Separate refrigerated machine Different job; do not mix

A car wash vending machine with a touchscreen can show product photos and prices clearly, which helps drivers who have never seen the brand. Your own sales data, broken down by product, is the best guide to the range after the first few weeks.

Car wash vending vs changers and vacuums

Self-serve washes run three kinds of unattended equipment, and buyers sometimes mix them up:

Equipment What it does Who makes it
Supplies vending machine Sells towels, fresheners, wipes and detailing products Vending machine makers, including KioskForce
Bill changer or token dispenser Turns notes into coins or tokens, or sells pre-valued cards, for the bays Changer makers; for example, American Changer lists bill changers, coin and token dispensers and pre-valued card dispensers
Vacuum and bay controls Run the wash itself, often paid by coin, token or card Car wash equipment suppliers

KioskForce can fit note recyclers and coin hoppers to a machine as options, specified per project and priced on the quotation. If your main need is change or tokens for the bays, though, a purpose-built changer is the better buy. KioskForce is not affiliated with American Changer; the name is used only as an example of the category.

Why a car wash is a hard place for a vending machine

Water and chemicals

A car wash is the one site where the machine gets sprayed on purpose, or near enough. Wand overspray, wind-blown mist and hosing down the pad all reach a cabinet that stands too close to the bays. The IP code under IEC 60529 rates water protection on its second digit: 4 is splashing from any direction, 5 is water jets from a 6.3 mm nozzle at 12.5 litres per minute, and 6 is powerful jets from a 12.5 mm nozzle at 100 litres per minute (Wikipedia, “IP code”). Higher ratings exist for high-pressure, high-temperature wash-down, which tells you how far a wash bay is from an ordinary outdoor position.

The cheaper answer is distance and shelter. A machine by the vacuums, under the canopy and out of line with the bays, needs far less than one beside a bay entrance. KioskForce does not publish a standard IP rating; the rating is specified per project for the position and confirmed on the quotation. See IP and IK ratings for outdoor vending machines and vending machine shelters.

Cleaning chemicals and road salt brought in on cars attack finishes, hinges and fixings. Specify the cabinet material and finish (stainless, galvanised or powder-coated steel) and any corrosion requirement at order.

Heat, and what it does to the stock

A closed metal cabinet in direct sun gets much hotter inside than the air around it. That matters for the stock as much as the machine. US federal rules require self-pressurised containers to carry the warning “Do not puncture or incinerate container. Do not expose to heat or store at temperatures above 120 °F” (16 CFR 1500.130). If your tyre shine or protectant comes in aerosol cans, do one of three things:

  • Shade and ventilate the machine, and face it away from the afternoon sun.
  • Specify cooling for the cabinet.
  • Sell non-aerosol versions, such as trigger sprays, gels and wipes, in hot months or hot climates.

Air fresheners and wipes can also dry out or lose scent in a hot cabinet. Watch the first summer’s returns and complaints. See outdoor vending in heat and cold.

Frost and ice

In cold climates a wash is wet and freezing at the same time. Water that gets into a door seal or a delivery flap can freeze it shut, and cold slows screens and payment terminals. A thermostatically controlled heater keeps the payment device and screen within their operating range. Ask for the operating temperature range of each component, not just the cabinet.

Security at an unattended wash

Many self-serve washes run around the clock with nobody on site, which makes a vending machine an obvious target.

  • Keep cash out if your customers will accept card and phone payment. Cash in the machine gives an attacker a reason to break in.
  • Anchor the cabinet to the slab with fixings reached only from inside.
  • Put it where it is lit and on camera, and where the screen faces the vacuums rather than a dark corner.
  • Specify door-open and tamper alerts to the cloud dashboard, so you hear about an attack the same night.

See vandal-resistant vending machines for fronts, locks and cages.

How customers pay

Self-serve washes have traditionally run on coins and tokens, and newer ones also take credit and loyalty cards (Wikipedia, “Car wash”). A KioskForce machine takes payment over the standard MDB interface or natively on the screen (payments):

  • Contactless card and phone through an MDB cashless terminal: Vending on Track VendCoin, Nayax, Cantaloupe or another terminal you nominate. If your wash already uses one of these on the bays, the same processor can serve the vending machine.
  • On-screen QR payment, with no extra reader.
  • Coins and notes through MDB coin and note acceptors. If your wash runs on its own tokens, give us the token specification at quotation and we confirm whether the acceptor can take it.

The machine writes every order itself, so card sales show which product sold, not just the amount. That is how you find out whether towels or fresheners earn the space.

Restocking and remote monitoring

A wash owner usually visits the site to empty the bays and check the equipment, so the vending machine joins an existing round. Low-stock alerts and item-level sales from the cloud dashboard tell you what to bring before you go. Prices can be changed remotely with VoTi remote configuration, for example to raise a towel price on a busy weekend. A 4G telemetry plan typically costs USD 5–10 per month per machine.

What a car wash vending machine costs

We quote each configuration. For orientation, these are our published starting prices for general machine types, from vending machine cost:

Machine type Published starting price (USD)
Compact wall-mount vending machine 800–1,500
BG10X10 touchscreen vending machine from 1,200
K180-6C locker kiosk (six cells) from 1,800
KF10X22 full-size touchscreen vending machine from 2,100

Outdoor construction, a corrosion-resistant finish, heating or cooling, note recyclers or coin hoppers, and the payment terminal move the price. Freight, import duty, delivery and installation sit on top. Installation is optional; in some regions it is provided through a local distributor, and otherwise your own contractor installs from our drawings and guidance. Machines carry a 12-month warranty on manufacturing defects; support is by email, or through the local distributor where one supplied the machine.

What to specify if you are buying one

  1. The products, with packaging dimensions, and which of them are aerosols.
  2. The exact position: distance from the bays, canopy or none, sun direction, whether the pad is hosed down.
  3. The climate: summer highs and winter lows at the site.
  4. Payment: card terminal make and model, cash, tokens, and whether you need change-giving.
  5. Power and network at the spot, with a protected outdoor circuit fitted by a licensed electrician. See power and connectivity.
  6. Quantity, destination and timeline. Modified standard models take 4–6 weeks to build and fully custom designs 8–12 weeks, before shipping.

Where this is the wrong answer

  • You need change or tokens for the bays. Buy a bill changer or token dispenser. A supplies machine is a different product.
  • The only spot is beside a bay entrance. If the machine cannot be moved out of the spray, expect a costly enclosure and a short life. Find another spot or add a shelter first.
  • Your wash has an attended shop. Shelf space by the till usually sells supplies better than a machine.
  • Traffic is low. A wash with few cars per day may not sell enough towels and fresheners to cover the machine and the restocking time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a car wash vending machine?

It is a vending machine at a car wash that sells supplies drivers use after washing: microfibre towels, air fresheners, interior and glass wipes, tyre shine, protectant and small detailing kits. It usually stands by the vacuum stations or between self-serve bays, so drivers can buy without a shop or attendant. It is a different machine from the bill changer or token dispenser that many self-serve washes also run.

What sells best in a car wash vending machine?

Items that solve the problem in front of the driver: a towel to dry the car, an air freshener, interior or glass wipes, and tyre shine. Your own sales data is the real answer, because demand varies by site and season. Pick packaging that suits the mechanism and the conditions: flat packs and boxes vend reliably from coils, and sealed packs survive damp better than loose items.

Can a car wash vending machine sell aerosol products?

With care. US federal labelling rules for self-pressurised containers require the warning not to expose them to heat or store them above 120 degrees Fahrenheit (about 49 degrees Celsius). A closed metal cabinet in direct sun can get much hotter inside than the air, so either shade and ventilate the machine, specify cooling, or sell non-aerosol versions such as trigger sprays and wipes. Check the label of every aerosol you plan to stock.

Does a car wash vending machine need to be waterproof?

It needs to be protected against the water it will actually meet. Under IEC 60529 the second digit of the IP code rates water: 4 is splashing from any direction, 5 is water jets and 6 is powerful jets. A machine by the vacuums under a canopy faces less than one beside a bay where pressure wands are in use. KioskForce does not publish a standard IP rating: the rating is specified per project for the position and confirmed on the quotation.

How do customers pay at a car wash vending machine?

Usually by contactless card or phone through an MDB cashless terminal such as Nayax, Cantaloupe or Vending on Track VendCoin, and on KioskForce machines also by on-screen QR payment. Coin and note acceptors can be fitted for washes whose customers still pay cash. If your wash runs on its own tokens, give us the token specification at quotation and we confirm whether the acceptor can take it.

Can a car wash vending machine give change or tokens?

A supplies machine and a bill changer are different machines, and most washes keep a dedicated changer or token dispenser. KioskForce can supply note recyclers and coin hoppers as options on a machine, specified per project and priced on the quotation, but if the job is mainly turning notes into coins or tokens for the bays, a purpose-built changer is the right tool.

How much does a car wash vending machine cost?

KioskForce quotes each configuration. For orientation, published starting prices for general machine types run from about USD 800 for a compact wall-mount unit and USD 1,200 for the BG10X10 touchscreen machine to USD 2,100 for the full-size KF10X22. Outdoor construction, a corrosion-resistant finish, heating or cooling, payment hardware, freight, duty and installation sit on top.
